Cool things in Singapore

Even though sometimes I complain about stuff going on in Singapore, it has quite some cool stuff.

For example, over here we have free internet on the bus. The system is presumably hooked up to a 3.5G HSDPA and router within the bus itself with the antenna logically placed in the center of the bus (or the midspan of the 1st floor roof), you will notice the bus as a blue double decker (Volvo B9TL) with a Nokia 6110 advertisement on it, saying “Wi-fi hotspot bus”.

So if you spot one, yes there is really free fast internet, board it, stick near it when it stops by your bus stop or chase it in your car. You can access it without having the need to login at all, just open the splash page accept a few terms and you are off! Speeds average and feels like about a descent 512kps connection- plenty of bandwidth to play around for regular surfing or checking of email.

Next to this we have something called “Tunnel TV”.

PASSENGERS looking out of the train between the Newton and Orchard MRT stations may be forgiven for thinking they are watching television. SMRT Corp has installed a series of 360 LED panels on the walls in the tunnels between the two stations to screen advertisements.

The panels, which have a total length of 72m and are 73cm high, are synchronized to the speed of the trains, which travel at 45 km/h. This gives passengers the impression that they are watching ads on a standard TV screen, SMRT said in a statement last week. Called Tunnel TV, you can see the technology along the two-minute south-bound train ride between Newton and Orchard.
